Bamburgh Castle : Those of you who have read Bernard Cornwell's Saxon books will know of Uhtred of Bebbanburg and his life quest to take back this place from his Uncle. Bebbanburg is, of course, Bamburgh Castle. Today it's nothing like it was in Uhtred's time (980AD or so), but it is easy to see why it was considered an impregnable fastness, high upon its rocky crag. I was in Newcastle on business and chose to come home via the A1 on the east coast and stole an hour at the great fortress.

Wanlockhead Autumn Afternoon : An afternoon scooter ride in search of some snaps takes me to Wanlockhead, Scotland's highest village and scene of lead and gold mining in the 17 and 1800's. Today is more about visitors coming to see the place. The Southern Upland Way passes through the village and it is a great gateway to the Lowther Hills.
